NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (February 16, 2015) – In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE) season opener at New Smyrna Speedway, Gray Gaulding made a late-race charge to earn a podium finish. Gaulding slid back as far as eighth after having a fourth-place starting position, but advanced during the last 25 laps to bring home a third-place finish.
Posting the seventh and fifth-quickest times in Sunday’s two practice sessions, Gaulding qualified his No. 20 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet in the fourth position for the Hart to Heart Breast Cancer Foundation 150 with a best lap time of 18.556 seconds. When the green flag waved to officially kick off the 2015 NKNPSE season, Gaulding had his eyes set on the prize. The field would go seventy laps before seeing its first yellow flag, which found Gaulding running fourth. With restarts being critical around the 0.480-mile New Smyrna Speedway, Gaulding would take all he could before returning to conservation mode. When the green flag waved with 25 laps to go, Gaulding was on the outside looking into the top five, but with a strong charge Gaulding was able to bring home a third-place finish.
From the Driver’s Seat with Gray Gaulding: “Hats off to [crew chief] Doug Howe, Matt Ross and everyone on the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts team. They’ve worked countless hours to improve our program and to come out and bring home a top-five finish is just what we needed. We’re right on the edge of winning races, so when we find it, look out. Last year at New Smyrna [Speedway] we were too tight, and this year we were too free, so if we can find that happy medium, we will be a force to be reckoned with. The side-by-side racing was awesome. I got shuffled back after being put three wide once, and the top is where you needed to be, but I could hold my own on the bottom.”
Gaulding will make his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start of 2015 on Saturday, March 28 at Martinsville Speedway before the NKNPSE returns to action at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday, April 4.
