July 5, 2015 (Columbus, Ohio) In his third trip to the 65 year old Columbus Motor Speedway (CMS) Gray Gaulding was looking towards a good points night before a mid-race incident found him stopped in the infield grass.
When the green flag dropped for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East sixth trip to CMS, Gaulding knew he had his work cut out for him coming from a 19th place starting position. Several early cautions allowed Gaulding to move forward and had raced his way to the top-10 at lap 30 before a lap 45 restart when a car missed a shift stacking up the field resulting with Gaulding stalled in the infield grass. Gaulding would lose a lap repairing the damage and start fighting his way for a lucky dog. Unfortunately the cautions didn’t work in his favor and he would come home with a 17th place finish in the NAPA Auto Parts 150.
From the Driver’s Seat with Gray Gaulding: “The Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Precision Performance Motorsports guys brought us a really good car, we were as fast as anyone in practice. I really thought we had a top-5 car, and that we just missed it in qualifying. Track position is so crucial at the short tracks but we had made up some ground early but once we got spun around and lost the two laps it took us out of contention. We tried getting our laps back but the cautions didn’t fall our way tonight.”
On top of Box with Crew Chief Charles Denike: “We had a really good car in race trim in practice and during the race. Unfortunately we didn’t qualify where we hoped and had to work our way forward during the race. All was going well until we sustained front end damage on a restart. We kept fighting the whole rest of the race but couldn’t get our laps back.”
In the windshield… The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will be back on track Friday, July 17 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Granite State 70. Gaulding led a race high 53 laps in 2014 before a right front tire failure forced Gaulding to pit road. Gaulding was able to race his way back to a 8th place finish. In two previous starts Gaulding has an average starting position of 7 and finishing position of 8 with two top-10 finishes.
