September 8th, 2014 (Easley, South Carolina) A top-5 finish keeps Gray Gaulding and the No. 20 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts team wanting more following Saturday night’s Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 140 at Greenville Pickens Speedway. Gaulding stayed inside the top-5 all day after posting the third quickest time in Saturday’s opening fourth-five minute practice session and second quick during the thirty minute final practice. With a fast race car and a game plan set in stone by crew chief Doug Howe and competition director Chris Rice all that was left was get a good starting position. As the twenty-second car to take time, Gaulding qualified on the outside pole with a fast lap time of 20.903 at 86.112 miles per hour.

With a starting position on the outside of the front row and one hundred and forty laps on deck, Gaulding knew patience and tire management would be the keys to success in the annual Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 140. When the green flag dropped shortly after 8:00 on Saturday evening Gaulding settled into second place and started saving his equipment before the green flag was ever displayed. At lap nineteen, Gaulding took over the race lead and would set his own pace for eleven laps before surrendering the lead at lap thirty and settling into third at lap thirty-two. On lap fifty, Gaulding radioed to crew chief Doug Howe “I’ve been saving the entire time” at lap sixty Gaulding moved back into second and regained the race lead at lap sixty-eight.

The first caution flag of the evening flew at lap seventy as a competition caution for the halfway break. Gaulding came down pit road to the attention of his crew for four tires, fuel, and slight air pressure adjustment, Gaulding would retain the lead and receive the green flag for the second time at lap seventy-two. The second caution flag would fly at lap seventy-four for a three car wreck in turn three, after a quick clean up the field would once again receive the green flag this time on lap eighty. Gaulding patiently waiting and taking care of his tires would slide back to forth at lap one hundred. The third caution flag would fly at lap one hundred and twenty three, “I’ve been saving all race long” radioed Gaulding. The green flag flew for the final time at lap one hundred and twenty eight, Gaulding would quickly move into third but after restarting on the outside lane would have a tough time tracking back down the leaders. Gaulding would have to settle for a third place finish for the second time in the annual Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 140 at Greenville Pickens Speedway.

From the Driver’s Seat with Gray Gaulding: “We’re good all day long, just got a little to tight the last forty laps or so. This is the best we have raced at Greenville, to lead laps and never fall outside the top-5 all day shows the progress of this race team. These guys strive to get better everyday, and I have been working to get better at the short tracks. We’re doing everything we can to build on the remainder of this season, in hopes of better things next season.”

On top of Box with Crew Chief Doug Howe: “It was a great day all around. Gray ran inside the top-5 since we unloaded this morning. Coming down here and testing last week payed off and we know what we have to do next season. Both NTS Motorsports cars came home inside the top-10 and that’s what we have to do to move forward.”

Looking out the windshield Gray Gaulding will be back on track in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Saturday, September 20th at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
