Statesville, N.C. (June 1, 2015) In an unexpected fashion the NASCAR K&N Pro Series raced at Bowman Gray Stadium for the fifth time in as many years on Saturday night with only having three cautions through the 150 lap event. Gray Gaulding started the night from his ninth place starting position after going out first in qualifying and used restarts to gain track position on the tight quarter mile Bowman Gray Stadium better known as “The Madhouse.”
When the green flag dropped shortly after 9:00 p.m. local time, Gaulding was a man on a mission knowing restarts would be his best opportunity to gain valuable track position and by lap three had moved up two positions into seventh. The first caution flag flew at lap sixty three for a spin behind Gaulding, when the green flag flew once again at lap sixty nine Gaulding was once again able to pick up two positions on the restart moving himself up to fifth. Gaulding would continue running fifth moving up as high as fourth before getting trapped behind lap traffic and settling back into fifth as the laps wound down on the fifth annual NASCAR Hall of Fame 150.
From the Driver’s Seat with Gray Gaulding: “I felt like we had the speed and drivability from the moment we unloaded on Wednesday for the test, Charles and the entire Precision Performance Motorsports group worked hard fine tuning and we were all very happy heading into the race weekend. Going out first in qualifying after the modifieds ran wasn’t ideal so we settled for the ninth place starting position knowing we had our work cut out for us and then the race ran completely different than years past only having three cautions but regardless racing for a top-5 is always a good day and gives us room to build on heading into Langley in a few weeks.”
On top of Box with Crew Chief Charles Denike: “We had a really good car this weekend at Bowman Gray Stadium. Gray was able to work his way forward during the race capitalizing on restarts following the race’s very few cautions. We finished a strong fifth place and battled for fourth for much of the late stages of the race. Gray and the team did an excellent job all weekend and we are going to carry this momentum to Langley Speedway in a couple weeks. Langley Speedway is a homecoming for the team and we are excited to get there.”
Looking Ahead… The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will be back on track Saturday, June 20 for the Visit Hampton 175 at Langley Speedway.
