Kernersville, NC (August 11th, 2014) Gray Gaulding had a very impressive first outing at the famous Watkins Glen International, leading laps and running inside the top-10 until dropping a cylinder during the second half of Friday’s Bully Hill Vineyard 125 took him and the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet Impala out of the lead and  more importantly out of contention.

After posting the 12th quickest time during Friday’s opening 80-minute practice session and 8th quickest during final practice, Gaulding knew what he needed to be a contender during the 51-lap event later in the evening. Gaulding qualified 10th and would start on the outside of 5. When the green flag dropped Gaulding immediately took advantage of racing in the pack, knowing from previous road racing experience the field would spread out. By lap 5, Gray had cracked inside the top-5 and took over the lead at lap 22. The caution flag flew for the halfway break, competition caution at lap 27 and Gray radioed saying ‘I’ve really been taking care of my equipment, think we might have something for them.” The field took the green at lap 28 with Gray leading them into turn 1. Gaulding continued to lead until lap 31 when he came across the radio “something just gave up, I think we’re down a cylinder.” Gaulding just trying to maintain on the lead lap and hoping for a caution, doesn’t get one until lap 46. When pit road opened, Gaulding came to the attention of his crew where they worked to diagnose the problem. Gaulding was able to resume the field, but would finish 18th.

From the Driver’s Seat with Gray Gaulding: “We had a great Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet, Doug Howe and all the guys at NTS Motorsports gave me a race winning car, unfortunately we dropped a cylinder with about 20 laps to go but the car is in one piece and we know what we need for next week at VIR.”

On top of Box with Crew Chief Doug Howe: “I hate for Gray and all the guys on this team. It seems to bite us at the worst times, not to sure what happened there but we will get back to the shop and diagnose the problem and have everything tuned up for VIR.”
