May 16, 2015 (Newton, IA) Gray Gaulding and the No.12 Drink Krispy Kreme Coffee Toyota team leave Iowa with a 36th place overall finish and 21st place in the East series in Saturday night’s Casey’s General Store 150 at Iowa Speedway after a tire failure and contact with the wall on lap 38 forced Gaulding to pit to the attention of the Precision Performance Motorsports team for extensive repairs.
Gaulding and the Precision Performance Motorsports team led by crew chief Charles Denike worked diligently through Saturday’s two practice sessions on the balance of the No.12 Drink Krispy Kreme Coffee Toyota knowing the sun would soon set and the track temperature would drop before the evenings scheduled green flag. When the green flag fell shortly after 8:00 p.m. Gaulding worked the outside groove and picked up a few positions knocking on the door of the top-15 before losing a right front tire on lap 38 forcing him into the outside wall and bringing out the first caution. Gray would make several trips down pit road for extensive repair and with suspension damage the team was set to just complete laps and salvage any points possible.
From the Driver’s Seat with Gray Gaulding: “We started the race pretty loose, thinking the track would come around to us as the sun set but unfortunately we didn’t make it that far. I never felt the tire give out until the center of turns one and two and at that point I was just along for the ride. The PPM guys worked hard to keep us in the race and keep any points possible, now we just have to go out and win and Bowman Gray is in both Krispy Kreme and my backyard and there is no better place I could think of to pick up a win at.”
On top of Box with Crew Chief Charles Denike: “Unfortunately we blew a RF tire early in the race. I believe that we had a slow leak in the RF from the first couple laps in the race because the car was getting progressively looser and hitting the RF splitter. Both of which were not problems we had in practice and qualifying. Once the tire lost enough air pressure, it overheated and blew the inside bead. We sustained significant RF and RR suspension damage. We worked on it on to make it drivable and continued on in the race to complete as many laps and earn as many points as possible, ultimately earning two additional positions.”
Looking out the windshield… The KNPSE will be back on track Sat., May 30 for the NASCAR Hall of Fame 150 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. in two previous starts at the historic quarter mile Gray has an average qualifying position of 3.5 and finishing position of 7 with two top-10 finishes.
